Blade or mallet, toe hang or face balanced

Blades (the Anser shape: Ping Anser, Scotty Cameron Newport, Odyssey #1) suit golfers with an arcing stroke. Mallets (TaylorMade Spider, Odyssey 2-Ball and Ten, Scotty Cameron Phantom) are more stable on mis-hits and suit straighter strokes. Face-balanced putters stay square; toe-hang putters rotate open and closed with an arc.

Length

Most putters are 33-35 inches. A putter can be cut down cheaply, but not easily made longer, so check the length (we read it from the title) before you buy.

Inserts, milled faces and condition

Insert putters (Odyssey White Hot, Ai-One) feel soft; milled faces (Scotty Cameron, Ping PLD, TaylorMade TP) feel firmer. Dings on the face matter more than marks on the sole. A Scotty Cameron is worth noticeably more with its original headcover.

Watch for fakes

Scotty Camerons are the most copied putters in golf, followed by Odyssey and TaylorMade Spiders. Be wary of "new" putters at a fraction of the usual price, especially from overseas sellers with little feedback.
