Lofts and which wood you need

A 3 wood is usually 15°, a 5 wood 18° and a 7 wood 21°. A 3 wood is hard to hit off the fairway for many golfers; a 5 wood or a higher-lofted "3HL" is easier and nearly as long. Many fairway woods have an adjustable sleeve like the driver.

Condition

Fairway woods take a beating off the turf, so scratches on the sole are normal. Avoid dents or cracks in the face and crown, and check the headcover is included if the listing says so.

Shafts

Fairway shafts are usually a little heavier than driver shafts. Match the flex to your driver. A 7 wood with a senior or regular shaft is one of the easiest long clubs to hit.
