Loft, bounce and grind

A pitching wedge is usually 44-46°, a gap wedge 50-52°, a sand wedge 54-56° and a lob wedge 58-60°. The second number stamped on a wedge is the bounce ("56.10" is 56° loft, 10° bounce): low bounce (4-8°) suits firm turf and shallow swings, high bounce (12°+) soft sand and steep swings. Vokey letters (F, M, S, D, K, T grinds) describe the shape of the sole.

Groove wear matters most

Wedges wear out faster than any other club, because you hit them from sand and rough. Sharp grooves give spin; a heavily used wedge can lose a lot of it. Ask for a close-up of the face. Raw finishes (Callaway Jaws Raw, Cleveland RTX Raw) are meant to rust and that doesn't affect performance.

Building your wedge set

Keep the gaps between wedges at 4-6° so each one covers its own distance. Many golfers carry a gap wedge plus a sand wedge, or 50°, 54° and 58°.
